New Actual Play of Badger + Coyote
A brand new actual play using the updated rules of Badger + Coyote released today! Make sure to check it out:
The mechanics behind narrative duets
The new updates that went into Badger + Coyote focused heavily on providing tools for players to build and experience stories as this wonderful dynamic duo, and we set out to accomplish that with four main updates: Turns, Guidance, Hooks, Story Twists, and Story Types. Let’s talk about them!
Turns
Players take turns ‘owning’ the world narrative, changing from scene to scene. In our travel-sized starter kit, we also provide a wooden mushroom token for you to decorate that is passed back and forth to indicate who the world-narrator is currently.
Guidance
There is minimal character creation in Badger + Coyote to get players into the action as quickly as possible. However, we wanted to provide more detailed guidance on what exactly a badger or coyote is, how they act in their natural habitat, and - most importantly - how that translates to roleplaying.
With the updated guidance, we wanted to focus not just on what is “badgery”, but how someone might play a character that has badgery or coyote-like traits. Each character now has a full spread to detail different aspects of them.
Hooks
The 40 new story hooks provide an opening, some of the basic events, and usually a question for the players to answer during play. The majority of the hooks are written in a similar format, using something like an adlib template to make it easy for players to create their own. As players use the pre-written hooks, it should become very easy to imagine your own!
This adlib-like approach to adventure hooks is inspired by our other game, Storyteller, which uses adlibs for narrative, and character creation!
Story Twists
Story Twists is a fun mechanic for players! At the start of the game, players can look through the list and pick a twist without telling the other. Weave the twist into the story as complications arise and events unfold, to spring it at just the right time!
The twists are named like “I’m The Problem, It’s Me”, and “The Dream We Share” to make them easy to remember while you play.
Story Types
Although Badger + Coyote is GMless in nature, we provide two styles of play. One where a player leads the story while the other discovers it (much like a GM’d game), and the other both players are aware of the story hook and work together to play through the story.
These mechanics all combine to allow players to work together and build off each other - layering in hooks, twists, complications, and dice rolls to keep the story fresh and exciting with little to no preparation required.
If you’ve made it this far, then we have a special announcement for you:
The Tether Journal Preorders are open!
Open the link between the future and past with The Tether to solve the mystery of what lurks.
We are now accepting preorders on the Journal + Game Bundle for Tether and are expecting to ship them out in late September.
If you already own Tether, the journal is also available standalone.
The Tether Journal is a player supplement for playing the exciting letter-writing game Tether by Adam Baffoni. It is purpose built to record your entire play through: from worldbuilding and drawing the town, to all the letters written back and forth, solving the mystery.
At the end, you will have a unique artifact you can look back on and relive your adventures.
A huge thanks to Adam for working with us to sell the journal and game as a bundle.
And one last button for the Badger + Coyote crowdfunding campaign, so you don’t forget to sign up! :)
